When the European Parliament needed information on animal welfare issues, it turned to the Eurogroup for Animal Welfare, which unites the leading animal welfare organisations in the Member States of t...e European Union. The Eurogroup seeks to convene a unified animal welfare voice with which to lobby the European Institutions, & to provide sound scientific evidence & detailed factual information to support arguments for legislative change in the field of animal welfare. This book brings together two documents initially prepared by the Eurogroup at the instigation of the European Parliament's Intergroup on the Welfare & Conservation of Animals. For each of over 30 specific areas of concern (such as transport, wildlife trade, genetic manipulation of livestock & research animals, & entertainment involving animals), the first section of the book fully explains the following: . reasons for concern, . economic & consumer considerations, . existing & proposed legislation, & . possible EU initiatives. This section gives legislators, officials, & all those with an active interest in issues of animal welfare an invaluable guide to the main aspects of animal welfare which are, or could be, affected by European Community (EC) legislation or the work of the Council of Europe & the World Trade Organization.
