Appearing in 1974, the four-volume American Writers: A collection of Literary Biographies has since had eight supplements. This latest supplement contains a collection of 18 previously published essays on well-known writers such as Rachel Carson and Shirley Jackson, as well as newer writers such as Tony Kushner. Also included are treatments of Nelson Algren, Amy Clampitt, Zelda Fitzgerald, Robert Francis, William Humphrey, William Matthews, John Muir, Dorothy Parker, Richard Powers, Henry Roth, James Salter, Louis Simpson, Gerald Stern, Jean Toomer, and David Wagoner. The essays consists mainly of literary criticism, although some biographical information is included in each. A cumulative index to the entire series is also presented.
