概要 This volume differs somewhat from the previous volumes in the series in that there is a strong emphasis on the physical aspects and not so much on the chemical aspects of intermetallic compounds. Two...of the chapters are concerned with relatively new experimental methods of studying rare earth metallic phases - high energy neutron spectroscopy and light scattering. In these chapters the authors explain the new kinds of information one obtains from these techniques and how this complements the knowledge previously gleaned from the more common measurements - such as NMR, heat capacities, magnetic susceptibility, transport and elastic properties. One of the remaining three chapters deals with NMR studies of rare earth intermetallics and the final two chapters are concerned, not so much with a particular experimental technique, but with physical phenomena that occur in these compounds: the electron-phonon interaction and heavy fermion behavior.

This volume covers various physical aspects of a wide range of rare-earth materials. Magnetic phenomena dominate the contents of the first four chapters which deal with thin films and layered structures, and intermetallic and nonmetallic compounds. The remaining two chapters deal with coherent emission and electronic structure calculations of lanthanide molecules. The first chapter covers the state-of-the-art of the synthesis and properties of thin films of the rare-earth metals and layered superstructures of two rare-earth metals. The following chapter is a review of rare-earth-transition metal nanoscale multilayers and describes the recent advances in our understanding of magnetic structure, interfacial magnetism, and origin of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of lanthanide-transition-metal nanoscale multilayers. The next chapter deals with one of the important series of rare-earth intermetallic compounds, those which possess the ThNm 12 -type structure. The authors of the following chapter review the specific magnetic and magnetoelastic properties of certain crystals, which are determined by the localized electronic magnetic moments of the lanthanide ions in the crystal lattice and their interactions with each other and surrounding ions. The chapter on coherent emission differs from other reviews on the subject in that it concentrates on the broader issues. Here the emphasis is on superradiance, superfluorescence, amplification of spontaneous emission by other stimulated emision than the laser effect and coherent spontaneous emission. The final chapter describes the progress that has been made in electronic structure calculations of lanthanide-containing molecules, especially in the last 10 years.

The rare earths play a unique role in science. These seventeen related elements afford a panoply of subtle variations deriving from the systematic development of their electronic configurations, allowing a test of theory with excellent resolution. In contrast they find widespread use in even the most mundane processes such as steel making, for polishing materials and gasoline cracking catalysts. In between are exotic uses such as TV screen phosphors, lasers, high strength permanent magnets and chemical probes. This multi-volume handbook covers the entire rare earth field in an integrated manner. Each chapter is a comprehensive up-to-date, critical review of a particular segment of the field. The work offers the researcher and graduate student alike, a complete and thorough coverage of this fascinating field. . Authoritative. Comprehensive. Up-to-date. Critical. Reliable
In Keeping with the tradition of the Handbook, volume 35 covers a wide diversity of topics involving the rare earth elements. The topics range from solid oxides for advanced, energy efficient electrical power generation (Chapter 223); to the oxoselenate members of the vast family of complex oxo-anions; to organic beta-diketonate complexes (Chapter 225); to the utilization of organic complexes for molecular recognition and sensing (Chapter 226).
This continuing authoritative series deals with the chemistry, materials science, physics and technology of the rare earth elements. Volume 38 of the Handbook on the Physics and Chemistry of Rare Earth incorporates a recapitulation of the scientific achievements and contributions made by the late Professor LeRoy Eyring (1919-2005) to the science of the lanthanide oxides in which the lanthanide element has a valence equal to or greater than three. . REVIEW: Highly experienced authors have written each review usually at a level suitable for advanced postgraduate students and research workers from a variety of fields. With the great richness of information involving references to other review articles written from different points of view, the books are an important reference source and should be on the shelves of most libraries.
