概要 Describes the structure and behavior of life and the environment in the two different but similar types of tundra, verging the poles and the other in high mountains. The 21 studies are mainly geograph...cal after overviewing the adaption to the extreme environment by plants, insects, and other terrestrial arthropods. They discuss such areas as Fennoscandian tundra, Iceland, the Alps, the Carpathians, the central Himalaya, tropical and southern Africa, North America, Venezuela, New Zealand, Greenland, and Antarctica. Considerable information is also provided on Russian and other areas formerly in the Soviet Union, much of which has not been available in the west before. The number and type of supporting photographs, maps, graphs, and other illustrations vary widely from chapter to chapter. The series is projected to include 30 volumes on natural and managed terrestrial; inland, marine, and managed aquatic; and underground ecosystems.
