概要 Explores the cellular mechanisms of oxygen sensing, interconnecting work on oxygen dependent gene expression and advances in the characterization of the cellular mechanisms underlying the cardiovascul...r and respiratory reflexes evoked by low oxygen partial pressure. Aims to fill the gap between molecular biology and biophysics approaches. Twenty-four articles in six sections treat topics such as: general principles of oxygen sensing including the cellular metabolism of oxygen and the possible role of intermediates in the regulation of gene expression and ion channel gating; recently identified oxygen sensors in bacteria, with a brief discussion on the mechanisms of oxygen sensing in plants; a summary of the field of oxygen dependent eukaryotic gene expression; the characterization of oxygen-sensitive ion channels such as the chemoreceptor cells of the carotid body and the adrenomedullary chromaffin cells of newborn animals, as well as the ion channels roles as mediators of the vasomotor responses to hypoxia in systemic and pulmonary arterial myocytes; a look at how hypoxia or redox alterations can produce fast changes in the excitability of central neurones and regulate the expression of glutamate receptors; and finally, a discussion of the relevance of studies at the cellular level when compared with the manifestations of hypoxia in animals and humans.
