While remaining an ardent formalist, Newmeyer stresses thelimitations of a narrow formalist outlook that refuses to consider that anything ofinterest might have been discovered in the course of functionalist-orientedresearch. He argues that the basic principles of generative grammar, in interactionwith principles in other linguistic domains, provide compelling accounts ofphenomena that functionalists have used to try to refute the generativeapproach. 続きを見る |
