概要	Revised and updated edition (first in 1984) of a remarkably interesting and useful reference on the writers (mainly historical, but some living) of Britain, Ireland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, an... English-speaking Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. Volume 1 begins with a series of 12 overview essays tracing the development of English literature from its origins to the present. The remainder of volume 1 and all of volume 2 are devoted to individual writers, with each entry comprising a biography, a complete list of the writer's published books, a selected list of bibliographies and critical studies on the writer, and a signed critical essay. Volume 3 contains lovely signed essays on the best-known works in English literature, as well as some works important chiefly for historical reasons.
