| 概要 | Palm (geography, U. of Colorado) presents a detailed account of how hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, and other natural hazards affect human settlements. He surveys the reaction to such dangers, includ...ng various approaches to evaluating safety since the 19th century, and how these influence the location of human activities. He proposes a new framework for hazard study, focusing on earthquakes and the California housing market. (Written before the 1989 San Francisco quake.) A major reinterpretation of Hawthorne's life and work as a writer. Luedtke (English, USC) shows that as a son of an East India captain and resident of an international seaport for trade with Asia, Hawthorne's imagination was fired by the romance of the Orient as much as by the historical and moral landscape of New England or the work of the English allegorists.
