| 概要 | Tomarken (English, Miami U.) examines Rasselas both within the context of Johnson's oeuvre and in terms of the history of commentary upon the tale. He argues that the traditional mimetic and formalist...c approaches were each critically inadequate, as are the contemporary theories of structuralism and hermeneutics. He proposes a kind of dialectical synthesis, a unity of opposing criticisms. An intelligent biography that finally (and unapologetically) resurrects Reed (1887-1920) as a left-activist and writer, as distinguished from the romantic adventurer previously cast in print and film.
