概要	Most technological hazards are characterized by substantial scientists, sociologists, ethicists, and lawyers. For professionals. biologists, decision analysists, economists, psychologists, political ...ncertainty. Recent examples include nuclear waste disposal, acid rain, asbestos in schools, carcinogens in food, and hazardous waste. Four primary sources of uncertainty in risk assessment and management can be identified: uncertainties about definitions; about scientific facts; about risk perceptions and attitudes; and about value. The papers in this volume address each of these sources of uncertainty from a variety of perspectives and include contributions from safety engineers, epidemiologists, toxicologists, chemists, biostatisticians, By placing the current budget woes in the broad historical context of Post-New Deal economic policy, Ippolito presents a more pragmatic, less frantic appraisal of the causes and cures of budget deficits than the partisan diagnoses offered by the contemporary ideologues. He contends that effective deficit control will require significant and unpopular changes in federal entitlement programs such as social security and medicare.
