| 概要 | Despite all logic, Hapsburg Spain managed to sustain the largest army in Europe from 1567 to 1659 to suppress the Dutch Revolt. Here Parker (history, Ohio State U.) explains how logistics and strategy...rather than battle kept Holland at bay for generations, including how Spain assembled the army, fed it and supplied it with materiel at a great distance on hostile ground. Through illustrations, tables and figures Parker shows how the financial, political and social forces that shaped Spain's military strategy eventually worked against it. Particularly interesting are appendices giving details on officers, expenditures, mutinies, and even camp followers. Continuing in this "new military history" approach Parker gets into more detail in this new edition, but remains very close to the spirit of his original effort of 1972.
