Volatile reactionary forces confronted Nehru both abroad and at home and he averted national disaster by ensuring the fair treatment of minorities and preventing war with Pakistan over Kashmir. The twelve weeks between April 7 and June 30 1948, covered in this volume, were marked by a change in the office of the Governor-General, the continuing quest for communal harmony and the attempt to nourish a feelin of responsibility for construcive nationhood in India. Among the many tasks confronting the country at the time were the rehabilitation of refugees, development of an industrial economy, integration of States and the preparation of the Constitution. Nehru believed that despite the country's problems, that one day India would tread the path of self-realization and greatness by acting according to Gandhian principles. He strove to improve India's relations with Pakistan, develop a foreign policy of non-alignment and build economic cooperation among Asian countries. During the twelve weeks covered in this volume, from July 1 to October 5, 1948, India celebrated the first anniversary of the achievement of independence and the first Gandhi Jayanti after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. This volume covers a period of eight weeks from December 1948 to February 1949, during which nation-building was Nehru's major concern. Recasting the finances, setting up new industries, inculcating a scientific outlook, promoting self-sufficiency in food and suggesting changes in the food habits of people absorbed much of his attention. These issues went along with his general concern for educational and cultural advancement and a keen interest in the development of languages. There was a marked falling off in the exodus both ways in Benal and Assam and a resumption of trade between India and Pakistan.Other major problems were the rehabilitation of refugees, arrangements for the first general elections, general economic policy, the formation of a new Council of Ministers, shortage of food, and the control of prices. In foreign affairs, apart from the perennial Kashmir problem, Nehru's attention was engaged primarily by the issues raised by the war in Korea. The works in this volume cover Jawaharlal Nehru's life from August 1 to October 25, 1950. They shed light on Nehru's attitudes to the immediate issues of the day and illustrate his passions for a wide range of interests.
