概要	Taking up a question first posed 75 years ago by W.H. Rivers in History of Melanesian Society, this study considers the decline in the use of Kava, a narcotic once widely drunk in the Pacific Islands....The author disagrees that Kava use declined because of its replacement by another drug, betel, but argues that its abandonment in many areas could be explained in terms of its association with unstable religious cults. As cults were abandoned, so were associated practices. The problem of Kava is therefore part of a broader problem of why Melanesian societies were characteristically unstable. The author sees this instability as both an outcome and a cause of weak institutions of authority and social coordination. 続きを見る
