Abstract The rapid development of numerical analysis as a subject in its own right, as well as its increasing applicability to mathematical modeling in sciences and engineering, have led to a plethora of journ...ls in its various subdisciplines, ranging from Computational Fluid Dynamics to Linear Algebra. These journals obviously represent the frontiers of research in their area. However, each specialization of numerical analysis is intricately linked and a broad knowledge of the subject is necessary for the solution of any "real" problem. Such an overview cannot be successfully achieved through either a single volume or a journal since the subject is constantly evolving and researchers need to be kept continuously informed of recent developments in a wide range of topics. Acta Numerica is an annual publication containing invited survey papers by leading researchers in a number of areas of applied mathematics. The papers included present overviews of recent developments in their area and provide "state of the art" techniques and analysis. Volume 1 aptly represents the flavor of the series and includes papers on such diverse topics as wavelets, optimization, and dynamical systems.
This is the second volume in the annual series, Acta Numerica, a collection of invited survey papers encompassing all aspects of numerical analysis. Following the success of the first volume, this year's papers cover many of the core topics in numerical methods today. Papers on annealing problems, parallel methods, domain decomposition, and multigrid methods will enable anyone with an interest in computational and mathematical numerics to quickly grasp the latest developments and emerging trends in this diverse subject.
Acta Numerica is an annual volume presenting survey papers in numerical analysis accessible to graduate students and researchers.
Acta Numerica provides an annual compendium of the major advances in numerical mathematics.
The fifth volume of Acta Numerica provides "state of the art" analysis and techniques in numerical mathematics and scientific computing. This collection encompasses several important aspects of numerical analysis, including eigenvalue optimization; theory, algorithms and application of level set methods for propagating interfaces; hierarchical bases and the finite element method. It will be a valuable resource for researchers in this important field.
Acta Numerica surveys annually the most important developments in numerical analysis. The subjects and authors, chosen by a distinguished international panel, provide a survey of articles outstanding in their quality and breadth. This volume includes articles on multivariate integration; numerical analysis of semiconductor devices; fast transforms in applied mathematics; complexity issues in numerical analysis.
Acta Numerica is an annual volume presenting substantive survey articles in numerical analysis and scientific computing. The subjects and authors are chosen by a distinguished international Editorial Board so as to report the most important and timely developments in the subject in a manner accessible to the wider community of professionals with an interest in scientific computing.

Numerical analysis is concerned mainly with using computers in evaluating or approximating mathematical models. As such, it is crucial to all applications of mathematics in science and engineering, as well as being an important discipline on its own. Acta Numerica anually surveys the most important developments in numerical mathematics and scientific computing. The subjects and authors of the substantive articles are chosen by a distinguished international editorial board, so as to report the most important and timely developments in a manner accessible to the wider community of professionals with an interest in scientific computing. Acta Numerica volumes are a valuable tool not only for researchers and professionals wishing to develop their understanding of numerical techniques and algorithms and follow new developments. They are also used as advanced teaching aids at colleges and universities (many of the original articles are used as the prime resource for graduate courses).

This volume of the "annual publication containing invited survey papers by leading researchers in numerical mathematics and scientific computing" contains five papers in which contributors review recent developments in their area of expertise, along with recent techniques and analysis. Covered in the 2004 edition are the calculation of linear least squares, the numerical analysis of functional integral and integro-differential equations of Volterra type, sparse grids, complete search in continuous global optimization and constraint satisfaction, and multiscale computational modeling of the heart. The annual series contains invited survey papers by researchers in numerical mathematics and scientific computing. Seven papers in this year's edition cover the numerical solution of saddle point problems, the computation of geometric partial differential equations and mean curvature flow, random matrix theory, numerical methods for large-scale nonlinear optimization, computational chemistry from the perspective of numerical analysis, steady-state convection-diffusion problems, and total variation and level set methods in image science. They are not indexed. Annotation ©2005 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
