In this paper, I discuss the nature of gifting hawks being connnissioned as an official by the Tokugawa shogunate, by analyzing the origins and establishment of the custom of presenting Eurasian sparrow-hawk chicks by the Yanagisawa Clan of Kai Province to the Tokugawa shogun during the Kyoho period. In addition, I point out that sparrow-hawks played a leading role in the shogun's falconry activities in summer and autumn, and refer to the regional characteristics of Kai Province by analyzing the dispute over sutaka-yama (mountains where eyries were located). Following these discussions, I demonstrate that the presentation of sparrow-hawk chicks was considered an "exceptional act of gifting" by the Yanagisawa Clan and was undertaken based on a rationale different from that of the ordinary annual gift presentation.
