Abstract This paper describes the results of survey on hospital midwives' sense of jender role, and the discussions were made on how they perceive maternal ideology based on recent ideas of feminism. Results o...f survey revealed that midwives working in hospitals have concept of maternity different from that of so-called maternal ideology. Furthermore they also revealed that their concept of sexual role is different from that of the general and traditional idea of specialization. They, however, did not consider their works from the standpoint of gender. From the studies, the necessity of expansion of idea of maternity for the support of women's health has been suggested.
