Abstract Fiber metal laminates (FML) are composites laminated by fiber reinforced plastics and aluminum alloy sheets. Recently, pin joints of carbon fiber metal laminates (CFML) were investigated to obtain the... damage evolution as a function of tensile loading stroke. Though experimental results need the stress distribution around the joint, little literature is available due to its complexities related to contact and plasticity in CFML or FML. In this paper, we have done a numerical analysis with the finite element methods to obtain the effects of plastic yielding of aluminum metal layers and contact friction of all the laminates. The obtained information will be useful to estimate the critical load level that leads to the initial damage in joints of CFML. The accuracy of the present results is also discussed firstly followed by various numerical results.show more
