Abstract In this paper, we will clarify the change of rural society in Korea based on agricultural census in 2015. In Korea, which has opened the agricultural product market, rural society has rapidly changed ...in recent years. In the 1990s, large-scale farmers were developed through government support aiming to improve competitiveness in agriculture. However, small-scale farmers were left behind this support, and polarization of farmers is advancing. Especially aging small-scale farmers can’t secure their successor, and sustaining rural society became difficult. Aging small-scale farmers have lent farmland and reduced the farming scale. However, aging small-scale rice farmers account for substantial share of total farmers because aging famers are tend to involve rice cultivation with fewer working days comparing with other production. Even though the number of working days per year is small, harvesting rice requires a hard work. It’s crucial for aging small-scale farmers to reduce the hard work. Additionally, we review the transition of agricultural policy and clarify the transformation of rural society based on the census from this perspective.show more
