The variability of sea surface winds and waves from 1990 to 1998 was investigated for the East China Sea and the Pacific, as has been made for the Japan Sea by the authors. The data analyzed were obta...ined at buoys moored off Ryukyu (28°10'N, 126°20'E) and off Shikoku (29°00'N, 135°00'E) by JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency). In both areas wind speeds and significant wave heights showed seasonal cycles analogous to those off Tsuyazaki and at a location of a JMA buoy in an open area of the Japan Sea; high in winter and low in summer. Significant periods, however, were short in winter and long in summer. The seasonality of wave periods was the same as at the JMA buoy in the Japan Sea, but opposite to that at the Tsuyazaki Station. The scatter diagram of significant wave heights against significant wave periods also suggested that most of significant wave heights are limited by an upper bound corresponding to a constant wave steepness. The existence of the upper bound of significant wave heights was less obvious than off Tsuyazaki. As regards the frequency spectra from the periods of a few days to a few hours, significant wave heights and significant wave periods as well as winds had the same spectral form proportional to the frequency to the -5/3 powers, in agrement with our another finding for the data off Tsuyazaki. Thus the two notable findings off Tusyazaki obtained another support from the data in the East China Sea and in the Pacific.続きを見る
