概要: This paper deals with the phylogeny and higher classification of the Staphylinidae auct. and their allied groups, i. e., Pselaphidae auct., Scaphidiidae auct., Scydmaenidae auct., Silphidae auct., and Catopiaria. The ground plan conditions of the Staphylinoidea are briefly described concerning the morphological characters useful for phylogenetic analysis. The phylogeny of the Staphylinidae and their allied groups is inferred, principally using the Hennigian method of phylogenetic analysis. Based on my phylogenetic study, a higher classification of the section Brachelytra is newly proposed. The family Staphylinidae auct. is divided into three families, Oxytelidae sensu novo, Staphylinidae sensu novo, and Oxyporidae sensu novo. The Pselaphidae auct. are included in the Oxyporidae sensu novo. Accordingly, the section Brachelytra is classified into six families : Silphidae, Oxytelidae sensu novo, Staphylinidae sensu novo, Oxyporidae sensu novo, Scaphidiidae and Scydmaenidae. 続きを見る

概要: The effect of using eleven subsets of characters on the clustering method was tested based on 85 taxa or OTUs of the Japanese Andrenid bees (Hymenoptera, Andrenidae). The eleven character subsets, which consisted of total (Nos.=130), randomly selected (100, 70, and 40), head-thoracic (40 and 58), total structural (40 and 82), PCA produced (21- weighted and 21-unweighted) and key characters (21), were analyzed by cluster analysis based on distance coefficients. The results were evaluated and discussed at the subgeneric level of the genus Andrena. The two phenograms derived from the 100 and 130 character subsets were similar to each other. The two PCA produced subsets not necessarily resulted in enough groupings, The 21 key character subset produced different clusters far from that derived from the total characters. 続きを見る

概要: Nine new species of the genus Stylops (Strepsiptera : Stylopidae) are described from 10 species of the Japanese Andrena (Hymenoptera : Andrenidae). Those are : S. japonicus sp. n. from A. (Andrena) benefica, S. truncatus sp. n. from A. (A.) maukensis, S. oblonguhs sp. n. from A. (A.) Zongitibialis, S. truncatoides sp. n. from A. (A.) shirozui, S. circularis sp. n. from A. (Gymnandrena) sasakii, S. yamatonis sp. n. from A. (Simandrena) yamato, S. kaguyae sp. n. from A. (Mcrandrena) kaguya and A. (M.) minutula, S. borealis sp. n. from A. 概要: Two new taxa, Rhipidandms scolytoides sp. nov. from Iriomotejima I. and Scaphidema hmuhiae sp. nov. from Tsushima I. are described. 概要: Observations on the oviposition behaviour of an aphidophagous syrphid fly Metasyrphus confrater and the defensive behaviour of soldiers of its prey aphid Pseudoregma bambucicola are reported. This syrphid lays its eggs in colonies of the aphid in winter when aphid soldiers are not a few in number, but weak in activity. In the autumn, on the other hand, when aphid soldiers numerous and active, oviposition occurs on nearby spider threads and not directly on the aphid colony. Thus, Metasyrphus confrater probably evolved an ovipositing strategy which is adapted to the activity of aphid soldiers. Soldiers of Pseudoregma bambucicola destroy the eggs and attack the first instar larvae of the syrphid when these two antagonistic organisms come into contact. 続きを見る

概要: Some observations on the pseudoscorpion-like soldiers of a bamboo aphid, Pseudowgma bambucicola (Takahashi) are reported. The soldiers attack only the first instar larvae of Metasyrphus confrater (Wiedemann), which is a predaceous species of this aphid. The aphid soldiers can successfully attack the individuals in the early stage of the 1st instar larvae of the syrphid fly. However, all the soldiers that attacked the larvae died within a few minutes, probably due to a toxic chemical substance secreted by the latter. 続きを見る

概要: Comparative studies of the population dynamics of the pine gall midge, Thecodiplosis japonensis, were made in four Korean red pine forests. Survivorship curves developed from these studies indicate that most gall midge mortality occurs in three periods of the larval stage : 1) in newly hatched larvae, prior to gall formation, 2) in young larvae, after the galls have formed, and 3) in mature larvae that have dropped to the soil. At sites where midge populations were decreasing following a period of severe damage, mortality rates were much higher in all developmental stages than at sites with increasing populations. Examples of density-dependent mortality which can combine to suppress populations or stabilize them are : mortality of newly hatched larvae induced by physiological changes of needles resulting from severe midge damage ; larval mortality resulting from early gall withering ; and mortality caused by Piutygaster mutsutama, a wasp parasite that attacks the midge larvae very early but kills them after they have dropped to the soil. 続きを見る

概要: Platygaster matsutama and Inostemma seoulis and their host, Thecodiplosis japonensis, are univoltine. Adults of both parasites emerge from hibernating host puparia ; the emergence periods are mid-May through mid-June for P. matsutama and early June through mid-July for I. seoulis. The females of P. matsutama oviposit into host eggs, those of 1. seoulis either into newly hatched larvae or into eggs just prior to hatching. The average numbers of ovarian eggs per female were 1,569 and 555 for P. matsutama and I. seoulis, respectively, and the female : male sex ratios for adults of both species collected in field emergence traps were 38 : 62 and 60 : 40, respectively. The parasites mate and oviposit during the day, and rest on the undersides of leaves of broadleaved plants at night. In both parasites, development is monembryonic. Whereas P. matsutama has only one larval instar, I. seoulis has two. In P. matszttama, the duration of the pupal stage averaged 31.6 days at a laboratory temperature of 20°C. In cases of symparasitism, adults of only P. matsutama emerge ; 1. seoulis dies in the first stadium. In cases of superparasitism by P. matsutama, all individuals reach adulthood, but in I. sea&is only one adult can emerge from a single host puparium. 続きを見る

概要: The pine needle gall midge is the most injurious pest of Pinus densifora and P. thwzbergii in Korea. In general, pine needle gall midge damage reaches a maximal level about 7 years following invasion by the midge, and parasite populations increase a few years thereafter. Four species of Platygastridae that parasitize the midge have been found in Korea, and their parasitization percentages are on the increase. Three of the parasites, P. matsutama, I. hockpari, and I. seoulis are effective natural enemies of the midge and have been utilized for biological control by translocation. 続きを見る

概要: Ten species of tree borers in 3 families were collected from bait logs and dead trees in red pine forests infested by the pine needle gall midge, Thecodiplosis _iaponensis. They are secondary pests and played a minor role in causing tree mortality in the stands studied. Red pine stands with about 14 kQ of cambial electrical resistance on an average in May were very vital ; those with over 21 kQ were in high mortality as a result of attacks by the pine gall midge. 続きを見る
