History of Brown's lily (= Hakata lily, Lilium brownii var. colchesteri) in Japan was discussed based on the survey of the old fine arts, fabrics and literature. It is considered that the lily was introduced from China probably through Korean peninsula in the era of Momoyama (1568-1600). The lily may have arrived first at Hakata, the old name of Fukuoka city, and thereby it obtained the Japanese name of Hakata lily. It spread from Hakata to various places including Kyoto and Yedo (Tokyo), both the capitals in those days. Mizunami city in Gifu Prefecture is one of the places where the lily has been maintained. The lily there might have been brought from Yedo (Tokyo) in early 1800s.
