| 概要 |
This paper examines the perception of the Tokyo Tribunal (the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, May 1946 ~ November 1948) and feelings of responsibility for the war among the general p...opulace, as well as journalists and critics among intellectuals, at the time when the Tribunal was created. The ultimate purpose of this paper is to reveal how an ordinary citizen perceived this tribunal at the time. As far as the sense of responsibility for the war is concerned, previous studies in most cases say that immediately after the defeat the people felt deceived. Furthermore, previous studies often claim the idea that leaders bear the responsibility for war made the Japanese people accept the Tokyo Tribunal. However I think that this dualistic perception of “leaders deceived” and “people were deceived” is partially wrong. This is because many facts stand in the way of such simplification. I claim that people at the time had more complicated views which cannot be simplified and their perceptions of the Tokyo Tribunal were also more complicated. This claim is the starting point of this paper and investigating the complexity of opinion is my focus and aim. This paper analyzes newspapers, magazines and letters from the period in order to prove this hypothesis. Such data were also used in previous studies, however this paper offers new points of view by analyzing these media, the author wishes to reveal how an ordinary citizen at the time saw the Tokyo Tribunal.続きを見る
