| 概要 | Carole Paul is a scholar of early modern Italian art and the history of the museums that contain it. She has edited this collection in order to create a pan-European account of the early history of ar... museums. She defines art museums historically here in terms of the "universal survey" museum centered on ancient Greek and Roman sculpture and Renaissance Italian painting and drawing, and sees the earliest institution of international importance of this type as the Capitoline Museum. Contributors are arranged here in roughly chronological order from there, covering the British Museum, the Uffizi, Museo Pio-Clementino, eighteenth-century German princely picture collections, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Stockholm Royal Museum, the Louvre, the Prado, the National Gallery, the Altes Museum, and the Glyptothek and Pinakothek. The book includes some black and white photographs and floor plans, but is primarily text. Paul is very clear and specific in her introduction about the nature and scope of the book, considering exactly what kind of museums the book deals with, how they are defined, and the cultural position the book proposes that they occupy. Each essay has its own endnotes, and contributors write clearly with direct reference to the physical structure of the building, its history and contents, and the social, cultural, political, philosophical, and civic purposes behind the institution's beginning.
