概要 | This introductory text for a one-term advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate course presents models of transport in continuous media and corresponding mathematical techniques. Classical construc...ions of solutions to linear PDEs and related tools are presented in relation to geometric-physical situations. Emphasis is on dimensional analysis and scaling, with the art of scaling reduction introduced in the first chapter. Chapters are ordered to progresses from purely geometric and kinematic concepts to physical concepts, looking at convection and diffusion as the simplest models of transport and then covering local conservation laws, free surface waves, and shallow water theory. Problems and detailed solutions are included. Mathematical prerequisites are fluency in advanced calculus and vector analysis, and acquaintance with PDEs from an introductory undergraduate course.
