概要 | What difference does it make to add "culture" into development thinking and projects on the ground? Culture has gone from being a "background" factor in development thinking to becoming a new buzzword... seen to be central in the dynamics associated with development processes. Yet the evaluation of the practical and theoretical implications of this cultural shift in development has often been abstract. Ten academics from the UK and U.S. contribute 10 chapters derived from papers presented at a 2003 American Association of Geographers conference held in New Orleans addressing critical approaches to culture and development. The authors examine the dynamics of socioeconomic change and development projects in a number of contexts around the world, and explore the question of how specific development projects and broader socioeconomic processes engage the diverse applications of culture, while identifying processes that might provide insights into where and when culture is associated with beneficial development outcomes. Included are case studies of natural resource management in Ethiopia, Andean indigenous development, Bolivian music in Japan, Mormon regional culture in Utah, and cultural reworking of memories of apartheid violence in South Africa.
