Papers focus on the conditions necessary for the accumulation of organic-rich lacustrine sediments which may have become petro...eum source rocks. These conditions include the tectonic setting of lakes, and their hydrologic balance, circulation, water chemistry, biological productivity and bottom-water conditions. Techniques for interpreting these from the geologic record are discussed. A variety of specific examples, including 15 case studies, are presented which consider basins ranging in age from Devonian to recent and in location from Scotland, through Africa and North America, to South East Asia, Australia and, in particular, China.
