(Egypt Exploration Society, Graeco-Roman Memo...rs 87, 2001) This collection contains three papyri of Hermas, fragments of otherwise unknown Greek poetry along with a substantial portion of Archilochus's Elegies and scraps of music, and a number of known prose works. The collection also contains Roman documents on agriculture and transport and receipts, as well as some very interesting reports on feudal society. Along with transcripts which are arranges on the page to reflect the original, the editors provide comprehensive notes about the content and context of the document and have provided an extensive set of cross-references and indices. In fact, some of the early Christian texts here are remarkable in their preservation, judging from the excellent photographs of this volume, and the content is fascinating. The four sections include a codex-leaf with part of the Passion of St. Pamoun (a text otherwise only known in Coptic), scraps of Greek fiction of Antonius Diogenes, a group of Demosthenes papyri that shows how careless some scribes can be and how deep the roots of medieval tradition go, material on a rich woman whose lands may have been confiscated, and a dossier of the House of Apion that adds more information about their family and lands that has been previously published. Part II offers otherwise unknown hexameter poetry, much of it on traditional mythological subjects; the most substantial fragment, 4850, combines Homeric language and pathetic rhetoric in a way typical of Late Epic. Part III contains substantial fragments of two rhetoric handbooks. All but two of the thirty-five documentary texts in Part IV relate to giro transfers of private grain-stocks within and between state granaries. The papyri in Part V relate mostly to the fourth and fifth centuries and are chosen for their contribution to the chronology of consulates and post-consulates and include matters on civil and military bearing. 続きを見る |
