Cleary and Gurtler (both professors of philosophy, Boston College) present, in chronological order, the eight papers presented at the different meetings of the Colloquium held during the 2001-02 academic year. Topics include the Socratic notion of piety, Plato's treatment of the nature of life, and interpretations of Plato's Theaetetus and Meno. The neo-Platonists also receive considerable attention with explorations of Aristotle's ideas of moral considerability, the natural philosophy of Proclus and Aristotle, and psychological interpretations of Plotinus and Aristotle on the grades of virtue. Each paper is accompanied by a response commentary. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Cleary and Gurtler, both professors of philosophy at Boston College, collect papers originally presented to the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy during the 2002-3 academic year. Papers deal with various aspects of myth in Plato's Republic, the hermeneutical retrieval of time and memory in Plato, topics from physics, theories of atomism, eudaimonism in the Greeks, and morality in Seneca. Seven papers and comments on them from as many meetings of the Colloquium during the 2003-2004 academic year focus on Plato and Aristotle. American--including one Argentine--scholars of philosophy cover Aristotle's Metaphysics as the ontology of being alive and its relevance today; Socrates, Aristotle, and the Stoics on the apparent and real good; difference, equality, and integrity in Plato's Republic; Plato's Theaetetus; Aristotle's account of agency in Physics III 3; class assignment and the principle of specialization in Plato's Republic; and the relationship between justice and happiness in Plato's Republic. A detailed summary of the contents of each colloquium is offered as a substitute for a subject index. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

This volume contains papers originally presented to the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy during 2005-6. Of the seven colloquia, two deal with topics in Neoplatonism, four are dedicated to Aristotle's ethics and metaphysics, and one to Plato's Republic.
With one notable exception, this volume contains papers and commentaries presented to the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy during the academic year 2006-7. That exception is the colloquium in which Alasdair MacIntyre offers a fresh reading of Plato's Republic. Indeed, most of the papers included in this volume discuss a wide range of topics related to Plato, for instance, the dangers of misology in the Phaedo, the Socratic use of rhetoric in the Gorgias, Plato's anti-hedonism in the Philebus, the link between mythical and logical thinking in the Symposium, and Heidegger's interpretation of Plato's concept of truth. But, apart from this obsession with Plato, there are two colloquia devoted to the Epicurean notion of preconception and to the Stoic conception of the good, respectively. Book jacket.
With one exception, the papers in this volume were originally presented to the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy during 2006-7. Five colloquia deal directly with Plato, while another discusses Heidegger's interpretation of Plato. Two colloquia deal with the Epicurean notion of preconception and with the Stoic conception of the good.
For twenty-five years the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy has been meeting to hear and discuss papers on recent research. This edition of the proceedings concentrates mainly on aspects of Plato and Aristotle. Editors Cleary and Gurtler, both in the philosophy department at Boston College, have arranged these in the order in which they were given. In general, the papers have been revised in response to points brought up at each colloquium. In the spirit of scholarly debate, each paper is followed by a commentary, sometimes a rebuttal, sometimes an elaboration of points made. The first four papers investigate Aristotle, Plato, and the Stoics on elements of what constitutes happiness. Other topics are the influence (or lack thereof) of Aristotle on Stoic determinism, contradictions in Plato's theories of natural science, dialectic and rhetoric in Plato, who claimed he was no fan of rhetoric in politics, and the concept of pros hen in Aristotelian metaphysics. The papers in this volume were originally presented to the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy during 2007-8. Four colloquia deal directly with major works of Aristotle, while another discusses Aristotle's influence on the Stoics. Three colloquia deal with Plato, discussing the "Philebus," "Phaedrus" and "Republic."
This volume, the twenty-fifth year of published proceedings, contains seven papers and commentaries presented to the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy during academic year 2008-9. The papers treat topics including: mind and body in Heraclitus and Anaxagoras, a reconsideration of Socratic intellectualism, the positive motivational intent of Platonic poetics, politics and dialectic in the Statesman, Aristotle on community life, the nature of virtue according to Chrysippus, and the beauty of scientific knowledge in Proclus. Book jacket.
Seven papers, most with commentaries, from the academic year 2009-10 discuss a wide range of topics related to Parmenides, Plato, Aristotle, and Themistius. Some of them have been substantially revised in light of response to their presentation. They cover Themistius on soul and intellect in Aristotle's De Anima; the logical origins of Parmenides' monism; cosmic orientation in Aristotle's De Caelo; and the unity of Phantasia; Aristotle on the form and definition of a human being; psychology and legislation in Plato's Laws; and philosophy, virtue, and immortality in Plato's Phaedo. Only names are indexed. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
This volume, the twenty-sixth year of published proceedings, contains papers and commentaries presented to the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy during academic year 2009-10. The papers treat thinkers ranging from Parmenides, Plato and Aristotle, to Themistius.
Seven essays document the colloquium during the 2010-11 academic year. They cover image and analogy in Plotinus, an Aristotelian distinction between two types of knowledge, the unjust philosophers of Republic VII, the medical background of Aristotle's theory of nature and spontaneity, attempting the political art, Aristotle on place, and Philolaus on number. Commentary follows each essay, and a bibliography covers both essay and commentary. Only names are indexed. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
