Abstract: Remote surgery is one of the most desired applications in the context of recent advanced medical technologies. For a future expansion of remote surgery, it is important to use conventional network infrastructures such as Internet. However, using such conventional network infrastructures, we are confronting time-delay problems of data transmission. In this paper, a remote surgery experiment between Japan and Thailand using a Research and Development Internet is presented. In the experiment, the image and audio information was transmitted by a newly developed low latency CODEC system to shorten the time-delay. By introducing the low latency CODEC system, the time-delay was shortened compared with the past remote surgery experiments despite the longer distance. We also conducted several network measurements such as a comparison between TCP/IP and UDP/IP about the control signal transmission. Read more

Broadcasting real-time surgery and teleconference with medical-quality videos was so useful to learn surgical techniques and other medical procedures. Abstract: A broad-banded medical network was established between Korea and Japan using Digital Video Transport System (DVTS) over Internet protocol. We used Kyushu GigaPOP (QGPOP) (Japanese side), the Korea Advanced Research Network (Korean side), and the Korea-Japan Cable Network (international line). The teleconferences with real-time transmission of laparoscopic surgery, neurosurgery, and endoscopic examination were successfully performed. The bandwidth was 30 Mbps for a line of transmission and two lines of DVTS were utilized. The uncompressed moving image had the rate of 30 per second. The security software was also used to protect patient privacy. This international telecommunication using high-quality moving image is very helpful for the exchange of new medical techniques among different countries. Read more

Abstract: In order to promote exchange of knowledge and standardization of the medical technique, social medical systems, medical ethics, new medical items, medical science, and medical education in Asia-Pacific area, we have established a medical network with high-quality moving image over broad-banded Internet lines since February 2003. Broadcasting real-time teleconference and live demonstration with medical-quality videos using Digital Video Transport System (DVTS) were so useful to learn advanced medical techniques and equipments including electronic medical record (EMR) / picture archiving and communication system (PACS) beyond borders. We have done 58 events until March 2006. In this project, we conducted a virtual site visit at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital from Yokohama venue of 25th Joint Conference of Medical Informatics to see the advanced EMR/PACS by the network in November 2005. A remote lecture about Korean medical insurance system was transmitted from Seoul. The session was given by Japanese language. Over than 260 participants, including medical doctors, medical engineers, hospital office workers, vendor company staffs, and students, in Yokohama venue enjoyed and learned the system remotely for 2 hours. The result of questionnaire survey suggested high satisfaction on the session. Abstract: We have established a medical network in Asia-Pacific area with high-quality moving image with broad band internet lines since February, 2003. Broadcasting real-time demonstration of medical procedure and teleconference with medical-quality videos with Digital Video Transport System (DVTS) and High Definition TeleVision (HDTV) with mpeg2, both need 25-30 Mbps, were useful to learn medical techniques (surgery, endoscope, etc.) and to exchange professional opinions beyond the geographical border. In this project, we have conducted 23 events in categories of teleconference (9 times), live transmission of medical procedure (7 times), and remote attendance to scientific medical meetings (7 times) between 5 countries (Korea, China, U.S.A, Australia and Japan) until 11th November 2004. There has been no major communication/ethical problem. With these experiences and current achievements, we hope to extend this advanced network system to whole Asia-Pacific countries to share medical skills and knowledge. Read more

Abstract: We have established a medical network between China, Japan and Korea with high-quality moving image with Korea-Japan Cable Network (KJCN), a submarine optical cable between Busan and Fukuoka. Broadcasting real-time surgery and teleconference with medical-quality videos with Digital Video Transport System (DVTS) were useful to learn surgical techniques and other medical procedures beyond the geographical border. In this project, we have conducted 22 events mainly between Korea and Japan in categories of teleconference (8 times), live transmission of medical procedure (7 times), and remote attendance to scientific medical meetings (7 times) until the end of Oct. 2004. On 12th Oct. 2004, we connected to Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, to have a first medical video teleconference with China in 5th Distance Learning and Internet in Association of Rim of University. With these experiences and current achievements, we hope to extend this advanced network system to whole Asia-Pacific countries to share medical skills and knowledge. Read more

Abstract: We have promoted the international telemedicine project with Digital Video Transfer System to transmit high quality moving images on TCP/IP in Asia-Pacific area since February 2003. We have used the canvas network in Kyushu University, domestic Giga-bit networks (JGN, JGN2, SuperSINET), and international Giga-bit networks (Korea Japan Cable Network, and lines of Asia-Pacific Advanced Network). We have three categories in the project, (1) regular teleconferences to exchange the opinion internationally, (2) live transmissions during operation procedure, (3) remote participation at international academic meetings. We have had total 46 telemedical events in Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, Thailand, USA, and Australia until September, 2005. We are planning to extend the network to Singapore, Malaysia, and Philippine until 2007. The project can promote exchanges and standardizations of knowledge on the medical technique, social medical systems, medical ethics, new medical items, medical science, and medical education in Asia-Pacific Area.
