Abstract: Mostly American anthropologists explain exactly how evolutionary archaeology differs from other approaches to the profession, identifying some of the nuances of Darwinism that are relevant to the theory and practice; and argue that Darwinism is applicable to archaeology as well as to the study of organisms. Abstract: More than one third of the human brain is devoted to the processes of seeing -- vision is after all the main way in which we gather information about the world. But human vision is a dynamic process during which the eyes continually sample the environment. Where most books on vision consider it as a passive activity, this book is unique in focusing on vision as an 'active' process. It goes beyond most accounts of vision where the focus is on seeing, to provide an integrated account of seeing AND looking. The book starts by pointing out the weaknesses in our traditional approaches to vision and the reason we need this new framework. It then gives a thorough description of basic details of the visual and oculomotor systems necessary to understand active vision. The book then goes on to show how this approach can give a new perspective on visual attention, and how it has progressed in the areas of visual orienting, reading, visual search, scene perception and neuropsychology. Finally, the book summarizes progress by showing how the active vision approach sheds new light on the old problem of how we maintain perception of a stable visual world. Written by two leading vision scientists, this book will be valuable for vision researchers and psychology students, from undergraduate level upwards. Abstract: Karl Ameriks here collects his most important essays to provide a uniquely detailed and up-to-date analysis of Kant's main arguments in all three major areas of his work: theoretical philosophy (Critique of Pure Reason), practical philosophy (Critique of Practical Reason), and aesthetics (Critique of Judgment). Guiding the volume is Ameriks's belief that one cannot properly understand any one of these Critiques except in the context of the other two. The essays can be read individually, but read together they offer a comprehensive guide to the main themes of the most influential of all modern philosophical systems.Karl Ameriks here collects his most important essays to provide a uniquely detailed and up-to-date analysis of Kant's main arguments in all three major areas of his work: theoretical philosophy (Critique of Pure Reason), practical philosophy (Critique of Practical Reason), and aesthetics (Critique of Judgment). Abstract: The issue of whether or not the UK should join the euro is a highly emotive one. The outcome of this decision will affect the lives of everyone living in the UK and every voter will need to form a view on this subject. Yet very little information is available that is neither party political nor written exclusively for economists. The book provides just such impartial informaton in a form that is accessible to those with no knowledge of economics. It features many issues, including the following: What is meant by 'joining the euro'? Will the UK pass the European Union's tests for joining the euro? Will Gordon Brown's 'five tests' be satisfied? The main advantages of joining... ...and the main disadvantages Will interest rates in the UK be lower if we join? Will there be a house price boom? If it all goes wrong, can the UK get out? Read more
