Abstract Evaporative demand on a transpiring leaf was evaluated by environmental factors of radiation, ambient air temperature, humidity and wind velocity. Under different environmental conditions, a constant ...linear relationship was found between the evaluated evaporative demand and transpiration rate in a model leaf. In a cucumber plant, change in transpiration rate corresponded to variation of the evaluated evaporative demand. Stomatal conductance, however, was extremely depressed with water stress in the fair daytime when the evaluated evaporative demand increased beyond higher levels of transpiration rate. Furthermore, a remarkable drop in leaf expansion was induced at night after the fair daytime of water stress, and it recovered under the condition of the low evaporative demand before sunrise. Thus, the evaluated evaporative demand closely related to plant water relations and leaf growth.show more
