Abstract The present study is intended to examine social contributory elements to the development of physical fitness, and to analyse the causal relations between some social elements and physical fitness. Phy...sical fitness test consisted of 5 items and the questionnaire consisted of 46 items concerning social elements were performed to 304 male university students in 1979. Analysis of data was made by Hayashi's Quantification Theory (II) which categoriezes both quantitative and qualitative elements simultaneously, and by Path Analysis. Main results were summarized as follows : 1. The examination on the contribution strength of individual elements was conducted by simple and partial correlation coefficients. The results showed that significant elements affecting physical fitness based on simple correlation coefficients were past sport experiences, training for health and confidence on physical fitness, and generally, the past elements related to sport, health and fitness had very significant influences, and general social elements were not significant. 2. On the other hand, according to partial correlation coefficients, main significant elements were training for health, sport experience in high school, influential people on health, influential people on physical fitness and confidence on physical fitness. In particular, as the past health and physical fitness elements were very significant in simple and partial correlation coefficients, these elements seem to regulate the present physical fitness very strongly. Although the past sport elements were significant in simple correlation, they were not in partial correlation. However, social elements showed contrary tendency. 3. The subjects who were discriminated as the cluster of high physical fitness showed following characteristics : (1) they were born in small city or local area, they were earlier in birth-order, and they had not the brethren of the other sex. (2) their parents were higher in social status (school career, occupation and income), and they participated in sport and encouraged that. (3) they had good sport experiences, sport conditions and friends. (4 ) they were superior in the past health and fitness, and they were affected strongly by significant others. (5) they were member of sport clubs and had strong sport behavioral intention, and they had strong confidence, feeling of satisfaction and interest about physical fitness. 4. An exploratory path analysis was applied to the data obtained. Sport experiences during high school had the strongest causal effect on the present physical fitness. However, it was impossible to get other good results because of poor causal model.show more
