Abstract Expense journal kept by Willen Bijlevelt during his stay there in 1650. It shows what he and his three companions (Caspar Schamberger, Jurian Schedel, Jan Smid) were eating and drinking, what they nee...ded when visiting high ranking officials, or demonstrating the mortars brought to the court by the special envoy Andries Frisius. This journal shows that the Dutch were brewing their own beer using brown sugar and rice. Bijlevelt also registered all expenses during their journey back to the Dutch trading post Dejima in Nagasaki.
