| Abstract |
This paper aims to compare official reports concerning China's policy towards ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), starting just after the Cold War and working through to the China-ASEAN Fr...ee Trade Area (CAFTA) in 2010. Tracing the changes that have occurred over this period will help bring to light how policy towards ASEAN has reflected the characteristics and fundamental principles of Chinese foreign policy in a wider context. Also there will be a discussion on how China has constructed its relationship with ASEAN across two time frames; from post-Cold War through 2000, and 2001 through 2010. The period up to 2000 can be characterized by China's proposal to establish a working group as a means of setting up a Free Trade Area, whilst 2001 to January 2010 can be considered as a time leading up to the CAFTA. This paper examines changes in Chinese policy through utilizing official reports. Irrespective of the limits and potential pitfalls that exist concerning official reports that have been released by political parties and the Chinese Government, they remain an important resource when conducting research concerning China. The voice of authority, where Chinese foreign policy pronouncements are concerned, can be found in Government's working report from the National Congress of the Communist Party of China (National CPC Congress) and the Government's working report in the National People's Congress (NPC). And the main theme of this study is to analyse the political part of each report. Additionally, there will be an investigation into the speeches given by respective leaders and an analysis of Chinese keynote speeches delivered at ASEAN+1 (China) summits since 1997.show more
