ハーバード大学大学院生のときの1913年6月に、T.S. Eliot (1888-1965)はイギリスの観念論哲学者F.H. Bradley (1846-1924)のAppearance and Realityを購入し勉強している(Ackroyd 48)。以来、彼はこの哲学者に心酔したことは周知の事実である。1913-14年に院生のエリオットは、観念論哲学者Josiah Royce (1855-1...916)のセミナー"A Comparative Study of Various Types of Scientific Method"に出席し5編の論文を発表している。これらの論文には、ブラッドリーの哲学を援用した彼の中道的思考が見られる。同じ時期の1913-14年に、エリオットは少年の頃から関心があった仏教について、ハーバード大学招聘教授で宗教学者の姉崎正治(東京帝国大学教授、1873-1949)の講義"Schools of Religious and Philosophical Thoughts in Japan"から学んでいる。姉崎が彼に教えたことは、主に、中道思想の大乗仏教である。このような論述から判断すると、ブラッドリーの哲学と姉崎正治の仏教論には似たような考え方が認められる。そこで、彼らの影響を受けて、当時のエリオットは中道的思考を形成していると思われる。では、彼の中道的思考の骨子はどのようなものであろうか。また、なぜ彼はこれら二人の考え方を共に受け入れることができたのであろうか。本稿の狙いはこれらの点を考察することである。
During the period 1913-14, T. S. Eliot (1888-1965) presented five papers at a seminar of the American philosopher Josiah Royce (1855-1916), "A Comparative Study of Various Types of Scientific Method" at the Graduate School of Harvard. Under the influence of the British philosopher F. H. Bradley (1846-1924), who he was reading at that time, these papers were written based on his moderate approach, an essential part of which was that the starting point for perceiving a fact was the immediate unity between the perceiver and his object at "now and here;" one fact is valid in terms of its relativity to another. During the same period at Harvard, Eliot became aware of Mahayana Buddhism from a lecture by Masahara Anesaki (1873-1949), a visiting professor, "Schools of Religious and Philosophical Thoughts in Japan," the contents of which supported the essential elements mentioned above. Thus, Eliot's moderate thinking was formed by both Bradley's philosophy and Anesaki's lecture.show more
