Abstract Drawing on the contributions of participants in a seminar at the University of Kansas in the fall of 2003, Posey (psychology, Benedictine College, Kansas) and Wrightman (psychology, U. of Kansas) exam...ne the work of trial consultants, such as supporting attorneys in determining strategies and procedures such as jury selection, preparing witnesses and graphics and participating in change-of-venue surveys, focus groups and mock trials. They also describe how the profession has attempted to define itself in the past 25 years as it faces a diversity of membership and questions about the very definition of "trial consulting." The result is honest and practical, and includes such questions as whether consulting helps to achieve the goals of justice and what needs to be changed.
