Abstract | This internationally comparative text on urban planning covers both the global and regional context in which it takes place and the different combinations of issues confronting different types of cit...es. In contrast to existing texts the book considers both what have traditionally been regarded as "world cities" (London, New York, Tokyo) and a range of other important cities in the European, American and Asian regions. The core of the book focuses on an assessment of the strategic policy and planning options for major cities in response to globalization and other key issues and challenges of the twenty-first century. The major cities of the world have been transformed in recent decades. While city centres, skylines and waterfront developments often look similar, whether in London, Tokyo or Shanghai, Peter Newman and Andy Thornley challenge the view that the leading world cities are all moving in the same direction. In fact, the responses to the forces of economic globalization in different cities across the world have been very diverse. While in some cases globalization has been enthusiastically embraced, in others it has been moderated, steered or even confronted.show more |
