Abstract | "The Qur'an is the primary religious text for one-fifth of the world's population and has been an object of reverence and of intense study for centuries. Drawing upon a rich scholarly heritage, Brill'... Encyclopaedia of the Qur'an contains alphabetically arranged articles about the contents of the Qur'an. It is an encyclopedic dictionary of qur'anic terms, concepts, personalities, place names, cultural history, and exegesis extended with essays on the most important themes and subjects within qur'anic studies. With over 750 entries, the EQ is the first comprehensive, multivolume reference work on the Qur'an to appear in Western languages." Short dictionary definitions and extended essays treat terms, concepts, personalities, place names, cultural history, and exegesis relating to the Islamic scripture. They also provide a summary of the academic study of it at the beginning of the 21st Christian century. The entries are alphabetical by English words, to be accessible to scholars in biblical studies, medieval history, comparative literature, and the social sciences and to general readers as well as to specialists in Arabic and Islamic studies. Muslim and non-Muslim scholars from Europe, North America, Israel, and Australia contribute some one thousand articles to the five-volume reference. Presumably such scholarly paraphernalia as introductions and indexes are located at the beginning and end. Annotation 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) Articles about the contents of the Islamic core scripture are combined with extended essays on the most important themes and topics within the discipline of qur'anic studies. The five-volume encyclopedia provides a dictionary of terms, concepts, personalities, place names, cultural history and exegesis; and also summarizes the academic study of the Qur'an at the beginning of the 21st century. The entries are arranged alphabetically by English subjects, rather than transliterated Arab terms, so that general readers as well as specialists can find the information they seek. Presumably the initial volume contains introductory material, and the final volume an index or indexes, and perhaps a general bibliography to augment the entry-specific lists of references. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) The first such comprehensive reference on the Islamic holy book in a Western language comes to its completion. The entry words are English translations rather than transliterations from the Arabic, so non-specialists as well as specialists can find topics they seek easily. Articles are signed, extensively cross-referenced, and referenced. Topics include terms, concepts, personalities, places, cultural history, exegesis, and summaries of the academic study of the Qur'an. There is no general index or bibliography. Annotation ©2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) The sixth and final volume of the series--a towering achievement of Koran scholarship-- anchors and provides entry to the series with five separate indexes. They cover contributing scholars and their academic institutions; all the articles by title; proper names of people, places, languages, religious and social groupings, rulers and dynasties, and other entities entitled to proper names; transliterated Arabic words and phrases by trilateral root, as in modern Arabic-English dictionaries; and qur'anic verses and suras that are cited in the Encyclopedia.
