| Abstract | Wavelets: an analysis tool is designed as an easy-to-read, self-contained introduction to the theory of wavelets. It is intended for graduate students of mathematics and physics, and engineers. The ma...n focus of the book is the continuous wavelet transform and some of its applications. The author uses group theory to unify the concepts discussed and create a strong theoretical framework. There is a detailed discussion of the various localization properties of the transform, in particular its mapping properties in Schwartz space and its dual (the space of tempered distributions), as well as in a Hilbert space context. Included in the book are several algorithms for the efficient computation of both the continuous and discrete wavelet transforms, and there is a discussion of the application of wavelets to the analysis of fractals. Prerequisites are kept to minimum, although the reader is assumed to have some exposure to functional and real analysis and group theory. The material is kept as accessible as possible at all times, with the author adopting a more intuitive approach to explain difficult concepts. Book jacket.show more |
