The annual publication describes and appraises activities and trends in the field of information science and technology. The titles of this edition's eight chapters are information ownership and control, pricing and marketing online information services, the design of interfaces for information seeking, sociocognitive perspectives on representation, metadata, cross-language information retrieval, computer supported cooperative work in information search and retrieval, and electronic scholarly journal publishing. This annual publication describes and appraises activities and trends in the field of information science and technology. Eight chapters are organized in sections on planning information systems and services, basic techniques and technologies, and applications. An introduction to each sections highlights trends and events related to specific chapter topics. Some topics include cognitive information retrieval, informetrics, text mining, and using and reading scholarly literature. Each chapter is accompanied by a lengthy bibliography, in a format based on the American National Standard for Bibliographic References, ANS Z39.29. A cumulative key word and author index is provided. Volume 34 covers 1999-2000, and volume 35 will cover 2001. Williams is affiliated with the Information Retrieval Research Laboratory at the University of Illinois. c. Book News Inc.
This volume reviews the current literature on various issues in information science and technology. The nine contributions from international academics and practitioners address such topics as distributed information management, digital privacy, subject access points in electronic retrieval, methods of generating and evaluating hypertext, and digital preservation. Editor Williams taught information science at the U. of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, from 1972-2000. c. Book News Inc.
Reviews numerous topics within the broad field of information science and technology and provides this annual source of ideas, trends, and references to the literature.
Cronin (information science, Indiana U. at Bloomington) presents the 2003 volume of this annual review, which contains a number of new topic areas and new contributors. Eleven papers discuss links between linguistics, epistemology, and information science; the dynamics of scholarly communication, especially in the context of the Internet; the use of information systems in the fields of museums and music; and more theoretical aspects of information science. This 41st volume of ARIST, edited by Cronin (information science, Indiana U. at Bloomington) opens with three historically oriented chapters sketching the overall development of the discipline; looking at the legacy of the seminal 1945 article by Vannevar Bush, "As We May Think;" and providing a historico- biographical narrative of "the impact factor," a citation-based indicator as seen through the life of Eugene Garfield, a founder of bibliometrics and scientometrics. The remaining 12 papers are more forward-looking and discuss such topics as universal access, digital libraries, context in information behavior research, semantics and knowledge organization, ontologies on the semantic web, personal information management, Arabic information retrieval, network science, citation analysis, scientific collaboration, and human geography and information studies. ARIST, published annually since 1966, is a landmark publication within the information science community. It surveys the landscape of information science and technology, providing an analytical, authoritative, and accessible overview of recent trends and significant developments. The range of topics varies considerably, reflecting the dynamism of the discipline and the diversity of theoretical and applied perspectives. While ARIST continues to cover key topics associated with "classical" information science (e.g., bibliometrics, information retrieval), editor Blaise Cronin is selectively expanding its footprint in an effort to connect information science more tightly with cognate academic and professional communities.
For more than four decades, this remarkable review has described incredible advances in theory and technology. Editor Cronin (information science, Indiana U.) notes this volume introduces new topics and revisits some familiar territory while retaining focus on the leading edge. In ten articles, contributors describe specialty growth (including similarity methods in chemoinformatics and geographic information science), information organization and discovery (including information architecture, collaborative semantic tagging and annotations systems, and literature-related discovery), information use (including information behavior and the relationship between the layperson and open access), and theory building (including document theory and a critical review of gate keeping). The articles frequently include social implications and long-term effects of new advances. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
